Victoria To Embrace Cultural Diversity Week 2015

The Andrews Labor Government is encouraging Victorians to once again embrace Cultural Diversity Week – Victoria’s largest multicultural celebration – when it kicks off this Saturday 14 March.

Victorians are proud of our diversity. More than 46 per cent of our population are either born overseas, or have at least one parent born overseas. Victorians come from over 200 countries, speak 260 different languages and dialects and follow 135 different faiths.

During Cultural Diversity Week, community and cultural groups host hundreds of festivals and events across the state to celebrate Victoria’s cultural, linguistic and religious diversity.

The Week coincides each year with the United Nations’ International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on 21 March.

Premier Daniel Andrews will launch Cultural Diversity Week at the popular Premier’s Gala Dinner on Saturday 14 March, alongside nearly 1,500 representatives from Victoria’s diverse multicultural communities.

At the conclusion of the week, Victorians should definitely make the effort to get to the spectacular Viva Victoria Festival at Federation Square on Sunday 22 March from 12pm to 6pm.

The Festival includes live music and dance across four stages, food, art, workshops, film, children’s activities and roving performances.

The Victorian Multicultural Commission (VMC) has organised the annual Cultural Diversity Week since 2003. The VMC supports and encourages municipalities, schools, communities and organisations to organise their own Cultural Diversity Week celebrations.
